Who Are You?

Published by Jobstanzania on February 22, 2013

Who Are You?
Sounds like a very simple question, but no doubt a question that carries a lot of weight and is often answered wrongly.
A professor once accidentally bumped into a lady and failed to apologise because he was lost in thoughts. And when the lady angrily asked him this question, he muttered under his breath “who am I? How I wish I knew!”

Answering this question goes beyond the name you bear; no matter how sweet or loving it sounds. It also goes beyond your profession; whether you are a doctor, an engineer, teacher, lawyer, professor or carpenter; you are not your job, neither are you the activities you indulge in- though these activities reveal some things of the real you.

Every individual has a mystery yet unraveled, something inexhaustible, that cannot be easily calculated, measured or defined; something unique, perhaps extraordinary.
These hidden potentials inside of you make up who you really are.

How then do you discover these hidden potentials? By going through a process called self-discovery. The realm of self-discovery is the best way to discover your untapped potential. Self-discovery and self-knowledge are two vital steps to unlocking your hidden potentials.
However uneasy the task might be, it is an essential step that must be taken by us all. Copper, Aluminum, graphite, and all the valuable minerals you can think of are all locked in the earth crust, these valuable minerals are very useful to man and without them, life would have been far from what we call interesting today.

In the same vein, our potentials are like these valuable minerals and the onus bears on us to dig deep into ourselves to unlock these potentials for the benefit of all mankind. You have to think long and hard about the reason why you are here and get as much out of you, it sure takes a lot of time and effort but the results pay off, perhaps the world would be a better place if everyone understood his/her purpose on earth.
Many of us never push ourselves too hard, we avoid risks; we can go as far as having lofty dreams and ambitions but we never get out of our comfort zones to make these things happen or at least try. Some of us start things on very good foundations and big picture goals but we never finish because somewhere down that road, we lose focus – forgetting why we really set out to do those things- all in a bid to be cautious. For the most part, we are afraid to go on this journey of self-discovery because we fear what we might find and so we choose to live pseudo-lives.

The brave do not live forever, but the cautious do not live at all. Richard Branson

What you are is God’s gift to you but what you make of yourself is your gift to God and to society. Don’t go wasting. Don’t die an untapped resource. Don’t die a sleeping giant.
Be disciplined. Focus. Be determined. Be enthusiastic. Be hard on yourself if you need to; by all means possible, discover the real you. You are more than what you think you are. You’ll discover that opportunities abound for you, once you discover who you are and what you really want out of life.

Most importantly, be optimistic and persevere, till you awaken the giant in you.
