What Do Employers Look For When Hiring?

We all know that the school environment is totally different from the labour market. The bulk of the knowledge needed in the labour market are not taught in the classroom. Hence, most job seekers are left to learn or develop those major skills on their own. Listed below  are major skills that put you on edge , display your intelligence and count for you. They are essential skills which no lecturer would teach you but an employer would need them reflected in your CV , interview and on the job.


  • In-depth knowledge of the company/industry: It is important you  know how the industry you have interest in works. This shows that you have an understanding of what is required in that organisation and can buy into their vision. This enhances productivity.With a sound knowledge, you can become a major player on that field.
  • Communication skills: These include verbal and written communication. It is about being clear, concise and focused. So many job seekers find to difficult to express themselves. We read or hear lines like ‘my names are’, ‘i have go to the place’, ‘i have apply for several jobs several time’ , ‘i have not get there’ and other bloopers. An employer would think twice before employing a graduate that has ‘a known track record and excellent experience with accuracy and fixing erors’
  • Team-spirit: Several job seekers do not fail to include ‘I am a strong team player’ in their CV even when some of them do not know what it takes to be a team player. Some people like to take the glory for completed tasks, boss around and cannot manage a group. You hear lines like ‘who do you think you are or what do you know’ A team player should be humble, ready to listen and learn from others. A team player should respect and tolerate different points of view. A team player forgets about the ‘I’ and picks up the ‘WE’.
  • Negotiation skill: This is about being able to put forward your way, understand where the other person is coming from so that you can both get what you want or need and feel positive about it. A good negotiator must think fast, understand both the verbal and non verbal responses of the other party and be analytical. You should also have basic financial, mathematical and numerical knowledge depending on your field.You must be prepared at all times.
  • Problem solving skill: Are you someone that dwells more on who is at fault instead of what should/can be done?  You need to display the ability to take a logical and analytical approach to solving problems and resolving issues. You do not have to see issues one sided. You should be to ask the right questions, sort out the many facets of the problem and determine possible solutions. You have to be multi skilled. Employers want professionals in and outside their fields to help their team think more creatively about solutions.
  • Leadership skill: You may not be a manager straight away, but graduates need to show potential to motivate teams and other colleagues that may work for them. It’s about assigning and delegating tasks well, setting deadlines and leading by good example. It is not about, ‘you must listen to me’ or ‘I am the boss so you must listen to me’. It is about, ‘i would like to hear your idea’ or ‘what do you think about this?’
  • Time Management: This is about showing that you can prioritize, work efficiently, productively, and manage your time well. It is also good to show employers how you decide what is important to focus on and get done, and how you go about meeting deadlines. Employers care-less about when you got the task, they are interested in getting the task done in a short time.
  • Perseverance: Are you the kind of person that hides under challenges and see no solution or victory? Are you the kind of person that gives up easily? Do you have the ‘i don’t care attitude’ or your slang is ‘it’s not my father’s company so i don’t care about what happens’. Do not limit yourself. Working life presents many challenges and you need to show employers that you are the kind of person who will find a way through, even when the going gets tough. Employers prefer someone who breaks the rules to generate great results.
  • Ability to work under pressure: What do you do or how do you react when you are under pressure? Do you become unbearable or unapproachable? Do you insult or exchange words with other co-workers? Do you see others as ‘insects’ or see yourself as doing all the jobs? Hummm…You need to be calm and collected.


These tips are not ends in themselves , they are just means to an end. See where you are lacking and work on yourself.
